For those of us who have recently started with design, I believe that speculative work may be a good way to get clients. It can consist of entering a page like 99 Designs and make pitches on jobs you find there, with no guarantee of getting paid. In effect there is an ongoing competition for assignments, which may sound harsh. But isn't it always so? This kind of sites only makes it more formal.

I've been meaning to do speculative work pretty constantly to see whether it can serve as additional income during studies. You see my first attempt below. You can read the design brief if you wish.
